Friends:

VFW 9/11/16Hard to believe that we are approaching the 15th anniversary of one of our darkest days ever in American history. It was such a bad attack on our country and we were all stunned. Personally, I thought that we would be under constant attack for a long time as we reeled from this surprise and evil attack.

But we won the day as our first responders in NYC did their best at a high cost to save ordinary citizens that horrifying day. Our sons and daughters soon joined the military to protect the homeland. Only 1 % of our sons and daughters wear the uniform of our country. But due to their efforts and our first responders and countless others, we live our daily lives without constantly looking over our shoulders. We still live in a free country and we remain safe and protected.

Therefore, please join the local VFW, Military Order of the Purple Heart and Remember our Heroes and turn your porch light on from sunset, Saturday, the 10th through sunrise, Monday, the 12th to provide a shield for our current military and our first responders throughout the US plus recognize them for their service protecting us daily.

Last, please join Lubbock’s VFW for a celebration on this Sunday, 9/11 to honor our first responders locally and nationally plus our active military. Let us take time to honor those on that horrific day in New York City 15 years ago who died protecting our fellow citizens, plus First Responders who risk their lives daily to keep things going in the right direction and those who have died fighting an evil enemy who wish to destroy our way of life. Please contact VFW Commander, Benny Guerrero for info on the Patriot Day Celebration.

Stop Soldier Suicide Petition Request

I am inviting your entire network to join in this important initiative. This is a first step. We need family, friends, co-workers, colleagues, church groups, everyone to take 15 seconds and sign this petition. Here is our message:

Help Stop Soldier Suicide collect 263,000 signatures on an initiative to address Veteran Suicide, the most important issue facing our Veterans and their Families.

Stop Soldier Suicide is petitioning our elected officials to develop a comprehensive program to better prepare transitioning Service Members for life after the military. This program - the Reverse Boot Camp - will help Service Members optimize their health, unleash career potential, and discover the empowerment and post-military quality of life they fought to protect. To support this program, I would ask you to do three, simple things:

1. Sign the petition here (you can read the position paper for the Reverse Boot Camp here).

2. Share the petition and its goal for 263,000 signatures through email and social media with every contact you have.

3. Ask all recipients to send this message to everyone on their contact list and share on their social media.

The number 263,000 represents an estimate of every Veteran life lost to suicide over a 36 year period using the 2014 suicide rate included in the most recent VA Suicide Data Report. These numbers are unacceptable. One suicide of a Warrior is too many. With your help, we will achieve this goal and begin working on important solutions - like the Reverse Boot Camp - to end this problem.

All the Best,

Jason

Purple Heart Day

Aug. 7, 2016 is National Purple Heart Day. It falls on a Sunday. Nonetheless, Remember our Heroes will be hosting an informal dinner that night to pay tribute to those who have received Purple Hearts[ wounded in war] plus celebrate all Veterans who have devoted their time and service to our country. We will also have 2 or 3 speakers address real issues confronting some Veteran’s today. Although most Vets come home and live normal even uneventful lives, some come home changed. We are committed to helping those who live in darkness and with fear and anxiety.

One of our country’s greatest hero was Audie Murphy from WWII. His bravery of holding off a  large German force by himself is the story of legends. Incredible bravery, but he went to bed every night after getting out of the Army with a fully loaded gun under his pillow. He was one of the first to address what we now know as PTS. Therefore, we will address PTS, Soldier and  Veteran suicide plus other significant issues affecting some Veterans.

We will also hopefully recognize a Texas Hero, Ken Pridgeon from Baytown. He is known as the Dauber for painting portraits of fallen heroes from Texas. We will honor him with the our first ever Russ Murphy Award for Service to our Heroes who have worn the uniform of our country. Please open up the link below featuring the story of Mr. Pridgeon and his passionate service to families of our fallen heroes.
